Top loading — a capacitance hat or similar structure at the upper end — supplies the missing capacitance at the top instead of the middle, so the current no longer tapers to nothing along the radiator. More of the structure carries substantial current, which raises radiation resistance and efficiency, and it avoids the loss of a large coil.
