These questions ask me to distinguish the ruler, central officials, local officials, and the systems they managed. I can answer them by identifying the level of authority first and the specific task second.

Match each role to its level

The pharaoh was Egypt's monarch, not merely a priest or commander. Royal ideology connected kingship with maat, an ideal of order, balance, and justice. The ruler was expected to govern and defend Egypt and to perform or authorize rites for the gods. Beneath the monarch, the vizier oversaw major branches of central administration. At the district level, modern scholars call the territories nomes and their governors nomarchs; the independence of these governors could vary by period.

Evidence or titleBest interpretation
Written accounts connected to public resourcesRecord keeping that supported the practical work of government.
Produce or required work delivered to an institutionAn obligation paid through goods or labor rather than a modern cash-only system.
A large store for collected cropsA granary used to hold and redistribute agricultural produce.
Inheritance within ruling familiesA usually dynastic pattern whose actual succession could vary instead of following an unchanging eldest-son rule.

Titles also change meaning over time. The word pharaoh developed from an expression for the royal residence, the great house, and only later became a designation for the king. Hatshepsut is an important reminder that royal status is identified by rule and the full forms of kingship, not by assumptions about gender or by confusing a reigning pharaoh with a queen consort.
