What causes a junction diode to fail from excessive current?

Excessive current destroys a diode because the power it dissipates in the junction, roughly the current times the forward drop, drives the junction temperature past what the semiconductor can survive. Excessive inverse voltage is a separate failure mode caused by voltage rather than current, and neither insufficient forward voltage nor carrier depletion damages the device.
