On the board carrying an MMIC the practical transmission line is microstrip, a track of controlled width running over a ground plane, which holds a defined impedance in very little space at microwave frequencies. Miniature coax, parallel wire, and circular waveguide are all impractical for connections of a few millimetres on a circuit board.
