Practical circuits: follow energy and information through the chain

Aprox. 7 min

Las preguntas se mantienen en el idioma en que fueron publicadas.

These questions cover power supplies, amplifiers, oscillators, filters and digital signal processing. Instead of memorizing a long parts list, follow either energy or information through the circuit and name the one transformation performed at each stage.

Give every stage one verb

In a power supply, the rectifier routes current into one polarity and the filter smooths the pulses. A half-wave arrangement accepts one half-cycle and produces one pulse per input cycle; a full-wave arrangement uses both halves and produces two. A center-tapped secondary can achieve full-wave action with one diode assigned to each half, while a bridge uses four diodes without a center tap. Capacitors oppose voltage change and inductors oppose current change, which is why they smooth; a resistor across stored charge has the separate safety job of draining it after switch-off.

Question typeMethodCheck
Rectifier waveformCount how many half-cycles reach the load with the same polarityWithout filtering, the output remains separated pulses rather than steady voltage
EfficiencyPut useful delivered power over power supplied to the stageThe physically possible ratio does not exceed one
Amplifier classRelate conduction angle to efficiency and waveform preservationA shorter conducting interval saves dissipation but distorts an amplitude envelope
Oscillator or filterAsk whether the circuit creates a sustained frequency or selects among frequencies already presentAn oscillator needs gain and in-phase feedback at its chosen frequency
Digital statesMultiply two possibilities once for every independent bitDo not confuse the number of bits with the number of combinations
I-Q processingTreat I and Q as perpendicular coordinates for amplitude and phaseChanging their numerical path changes modulation, but does not remove converter or noise limits

For RF stages, keep energy accounting separate from waveform fidelity. Efficiency always places the useful output above the input that supplies it. Conduction for less of each cycle reduces the time a device carries current while dropping voltage, but the price is nonlinearity. That trade is acceptable for a constant-amplitude signal whose information is carried by frequency, not for a signal whose envelope must be preserved. A linear amplifier is therefore defined by a scaled output that keeps the input waveform, not merely by being attached to a transceiver.

Then follow information. An oscillator needs an amplifier and a frequency-selective feedback path; an LC tank selects frequency through its inductance and capacitance. A balanced modulator produces mixing products on both sides of the suppressed carrier, after which a filter can select one side. At reception, a locally supplied carrier lets a product detector recover the original information. In an SDR, digitized I and Q values are two perpendicular coordinates of the same RF signal, so processing their path can express different combinations of amplitude and phase. Software can filter, detect and modulate, but it does not make sampling hardware or the receiver noise limit disappear.
