Part 97 questions: find the hinge before comparing options

Aprox. 7 min

Las preguntas se mantienen en el idioma en que fueron publicadas.

This topic asks who is answerable for a transmission, whether an authorization is in force at the moment you key up, and how far a general prohibition reaches. The wording changes from question to question, but a handful of hinges decide a large share of them.

Four hinges worth testing first

Before comparing options, decide which hinge the question sits on. Options that fail it can be dropped without recalling a single frequency, and those left standing usually differ on one word.

HingeWhat settles it
Who holds authorityThe Commission writes and enforces these rules; a volunteer coordinator only recommends channels, and holds that role because local amateurs eligible for coordination recognize it
Is a grant in forcePermission to transmit lasts exactly as long as a current grant stands in the Commission's licensing record
Whose class answersPrivileges follow the class of the operator responsible for the transmission, and the licensee answers alongside that operator
Flat ban or named way outMusic, hidden meaning, payment for operating and transmissions aimed at the public are barred as such, each yielding only where its own rule names a way out

Two habits finish the job. A defined term is settled by the test written into its own definition, while a wrong option offers a more intuitive test instead. And an option gathering all the others is neither trap nor gift: read each line alone, since independent true reasons make it right, while a single line the rules never say brings it down.
