First conditional forms: choose the result and handle unless

Aprox. 5 min

Las preguntas se mantienen en el idioma en que fueron publicadas.

These questions ask you to choose the result that matches a real condition: a prediction, permission, possibility, advice or direct instruction. They also test whether unless expresses the intended negative condition without reversing the meaning.

Choose the purpose of the result clause

Start with the condition clause. An ordinary open condition about now or the future takes the present simple after if or unless, even when the event lies ahead. Next ask what the other clause is doing rather than automatically adding will. A stated future consequence takes will plus the base form. Permission takes can or may plus the base form; ability takes can; a possible but not certain outcome takes may. Advice takes should or ought to plus the base form. A direct instruction begins with the base form and normally leaves its understood subject unspoken. Use only one modal in the same verb phrase.

Purpose of the resultForm to use
A future consequence or commitmentWill plus the base form.
Permission under the conditionCan or may plus the base form.
Ability under the conditionCan plus the base form.
A possible but not certain outcomeMay plus the base form.
Advice or recommendationShould or ought to plus the base form.
An instruction to follow when the condition occursThe imperative base form, without will.

For unless, translate the logic once: unless A means if A does not happen. Write an affirmative present verb after unless, then check the real-world relationship. If removing or adding the event changes the consequence in the opposite direction from the stated situation, the sentence has been reversed.
