Past simple passive: match was or were with a participle

Aprox. 5 min

Las preguntas se mantienen en el idioma en que fueron publicadas.

These questions ask you to build or recognise a passive for a completed event in the past. The reliable method is to identify the past-time signal, confirm that the subject receives the action, choose was or were by agreement, and add the past participle.

Build the phrase from time and subject

First find the time frame. Yesterday, last night, last Friday, in a finished year, or a record of a completed event normally points to the past simple. Then identify the grammatical subject and ask whether it performs the action or receives it. A receiving subject calls for a passive frame. Choose was or were from the subject's number, then place the lexical verb in its past-participle form. Do not choose the auxiliary from a nearby plural noun or from the agent in a by-phrase.

Signal or subjectDecision
A finished time such as yesterday, last week, a past date or a completed recordUse the simple past time frame.
I, one thing, a singular noun, or a phrase beginning with each or everyBegin the passive phrase with was. Each and every keep the subject singular.
Two or more things, a plural noun, we, they or youBegin the passive phrase with were. Words such as both and two make the plural reading explicit.
The lexical verb after was or wereUse its past participle, not the base form or the -ing form.
The expression be bornKeep born and change be to was or were for the subject. Birthed is not the neutral standard verb for this meaning.

Run a four-part check before deciding: finished past time, receiving subject, agreeing was or were, and a past participle. This keeps tense, voice, agreement and verb shape as separate decisions.
