U.S. holidays: identify the purpose before naming the day

Aprox. 4 min

Las preguntas se mantienen en el idioma en que fueron publicadas.

Holiday questions usually ask for a name or a purpose. First decide which one the officer wants. If the question asks for several holidays, give different names. If it asks what one holiday means, answer with the people or event it honors.

Use purpose groups

Learn every holiday as a pair: its full name and its reason. Some reasons point to a date, some to a person, and some to an event. First decide whether the prompt wants a name or a reason. Then compare the words in the prompt with the reason on your card.

Prompt asks forYour first step
Several namesRecall full holiday names and make sure they are different
One holiday's purposeName the person or event at the center of that holiday
A date or eventKeep the holiday's name separate from the history it marks
A similar-sounding purposeCheck the exact group of people or event instead of choosing by mood

For the name-three task, use a fixed set that this bank verifies: Memorial Day, Juneteenth, and Labor Day. Say each full name clearly. Memorial Day honors members of the U.S. armed forces who died in military service. A day can be important across the country without being a federal holiday. The regular day for federal voting is the wrong kind of answer to this task.

For a purpose question, first put the main word in plain English. Independence describes a country governing itself instead of being ruled by another country. That meaning points to the kind of event you need, but it does not sort every answer choice for you. Then give the complete reason in your own words.
