Recent U.S. history: place each clue in the right story

Las preguntas se mantienen en el idioma en que fueron publicadas.

This topic covers many years, so do not learn it as one long list. In the oral interview, first listen for the kind of answer requested: a war, a reason, a person, a social change, or an example. Then place the question in its time period.

Use a time-and-relationship check

Use the year words in the prompt before using a war name. The 1900s run from 1900 through 1999; the 2000s begin after that. World War I was one war fought by the U.S. in the 1900s. Inside one century, use broad parts—early, middle, and late—only to place the clue. Do not build a list of every war from this paragraph. Instead, connect each studied event to its own dates and check whether those dates fit the period asked for.

Clue in the questionWhat to identify
Cause or purposeName the trigger or purpose for that conflict, not a cause from a different war
Who was president, or what was a person known for?Match the person to the right period and role. Franklin Roosevelt was president during the Great Depression and World War II.
What was an event or movement?Decide what changed and in which direction before choosing a date or name
Name one exampleCheck that the example belongs to the requested country and category

For a war question, make one small card with three fields: when it happened, what brought the U.S. into it, and what larger aim the country followed. Compare all three fields with the prompt. A reason from another war can sound familiar and still be wrong. The word enter appears in several questions, so it cannot identify a war by itself.

For people and movements, check direction as well as time. The civil rights movement worked against racial barriers; it did not create more of them. During the Cold War, the Soviet Union, also called the USSR, was the main rival of the U.S. A modern military and political leader should not be matched to work on a founding-era document. For examples of peoples or inventions, ask whether the choice fits the U.S. and the group requested, rather than accepting any familiar name.
