What type of polarization is supported by ground-wave propagation?

A horizontal electric field lying along conductive ground is largely short-circuited by it, so only a vertically polarized wave travels efficiently as a surface wave. Circular and elliptical polarization each contain a horizontal component and are attenuated for the same reason.
