Gallium arsenide has electron mobility several times that of silicon and sits on a nearly insulating substrate, so devices built on it still have gain where silicon transit times and substrate loss have already taken over — the microwave range. Those properties buy nothing in high-current rectifiers, audio stages, or very low-frequency RF, where cheap and rugged silicon wins.
