A trivalent atom such as boron has one fewer valence electron than the silicon atom it replaces, so it accepts an electron from a neighboring bond and leaves a hole behind; dopants that behave this way are called acceptors. Donor impurities do the opposite by contributing free electrons, and the other two names are not used for dopant atoms.
