What happens when the level of a comparator’s input signal crosses the threshold voltage?

A comparator does one thing: it reports which of its two inputs is larger, so its output changes state at the moment the input signal crosses the threshold voltage. An ordinary threshold crossing does not damage the input, the reference level does not appear at the output, and a comparator used open-loop has no feedback loop to destabilize.
