What absorbs the energy from light falling on a photovoltaic cell?

Light arrives as photons, but it is the electrons in the cell's semiconductor that absorb that energy and are lifted across the band gap, leaving holes behind and producing the current the cell delivers. Photons carry the energy rather than absorb it, holes are what the departing electrons leave behind, and protons take no part.
