Digital Radio Mondiale is a multicarrier digital signal whose subcarriers carry phase as well as amplitude information, so the receiver must translate the whole passband linearly down to audio for the decoding software. An SSB receiver with its synchronous demodulator does exactly that; an envelope-detecting AM receiver discards the phase relationships the decoder needs.
