Contests are kept off 30 meters, along with the other narrow bands gained at the 1979 conference. The band is only 50 kHz wide, is shared on a secondary basis with fixed-service stations, and carries no phone at all, so contest activity there is barred by band plan and by contest rules rather than by the FCC. Contests are commonplace on 6 meters, 70 centimeters and 33 centimeters.
