An SSB signal is as wide as the audio it carries, and transmitters limit the speech passband to roughly 300 Hz to 2800 Hz for intelligibility, giving an occupied bandwidth of about 2.4 to 3 kHz. One kHz would cut away the speech frequencies needed to be understood, and 6 and 15 kHz correspond to double sideband AM and FM.
