At what distance from the "Stop Line" or the "No Stopping" sign must a driver stop to miss an approaching train?

When a train must be allowed to pass, a stop line or the corresponding stopping sign designates the exact boundary before which the vehicle must wait. Adding an arbitrary extra gap would move the stopping point away from the traffic control provided for that purpose.
