Photosynthesis uses a gas taken from the air together with water drawn up from the soil, and it builds sugar while giving off a gas, so the two raw materials stand to the left of the arrow and the two products to the right. Turning the same arrow round describes respiration instead, which breaks sugar down rather than building it; nothing edible is drawn from the soil as a raw material; and an equation that ends in starch is wrong as well, because that store is laid down afterwards from the sugar and never comes straight out of the reaction.
