No article: recognise general meaning before adding a determiner

پرسش‌ها به همان زبانی می‌مانند که منتشر شده‌اند.

These questions ask whether a noun phrase needs a, an, the or no article. The reliable method is to decide what the noun means in its sentence before thinking about the first sound or choosing a familiar phrase.

Choose meaning first

First ask whether the noun expresses a general class, substance or activity, or points to one identifiable instance. General meaning often licenses no article in a few common families: uncountable substances, languages standing alone, sports and games used as activities, and meals as part of an ordinary routine. This is a grammatical pattern, not permission to omit articles from every general noun. A singular countable noun still normally needs a determiner.

Signal in the sentenceForm to use
An uncountable substance discussed in generalUse no article. If a clause or shared context identifies a particular quantity, use the instead.
A language name standing aloneUse no article. If a following phrase restricts it to one identifiable variety, use the.
A sport or game named as the activityUse no article. Do not transfer the separate pattern used with musical instruments.
A meal named as a normal routineUse no article. A described meal can become one countable occasion and take a or an; an already identified meal takes the.
A singular countable category nounUse a or an when classifying something as one member of that category. Choose between them by the next sound, not the next letter.

Use a two-step check. Mark any words after the noun that narrow its meaning, such as a relative clause or another specifying phrase. Then test countability: if the phrase refers to one countable example rather than a general activity or substance, it cannot normally remain bare.

The traps

Tempting moveHow to reject it
Adding the because a language or routine meal feels familiarFamiliarity is not enough. A language standing alone and an ordinary meal in its routine sense remain bare unless the sentence restricts or identifies them.
Leaving every uncountable noun bareUncountability does not block the. A specifying clause can identify a particular quantity, so check the whole noun phrase rather than the noun alone.
Keeping a meal name bare after it is describedA description can present the meal as one countable occasion. Then choose a or an by the initial sound of the following word.
Treating a countable category word like the name of an activityThe activity name may be bare, but a singular noun that classifies the activity as one kind of thing needs a determiner.
