American government principles: sort the question before you answer

پرسش‌ها به همان زبانی می‌مانند که منتشر شده‌اند.

This topic asks about the basic ideas of American government, what the Constitution does, how it changes, how law limits power, and how the economy works. In the oral interview, first listen for the kind of question. Then give one short answer, or the number of answers requested.

Build a small map of the topic

Start with the people. In the American system, government gets its power from the people, who choose representatives. Power does not pass through a royal family. The Constitution sets up the national government, gives powers to its parts, and limits those powers. Changes become part of it through amendments, not through one court decision or one order from a president.

A government document can do more than one job. The Constitution is both the plan for national government and a limit on government power. Other laws and government actions must fit that plan. The Constitution has 27 amendments in all, and its first ten amendments are called the Bill of Rights. When a question asks about a document, listen for the job named in the prompt instead of choosing a famous title only because you recognize it.

Next connect limits to structure. Federal power is split among branches, and national power is also divided from state power. Each part has its own work, and each must follow the law. The rule of law reaches ordinary people, leaders, and government bodies. Holding office does not put anyone above the law.

For a number question, first say what is being counted: a group of amendments, a full total, a number of members, or a year. Then recall the number. This stops a familiar number from another fact from taking over. For the economy question, use only the facts supported by this bank: property and businesses are mostly privately owned, buyers and sellers choose exchanges, markets usually shape prices and production, and government also regulates the market. Match the system name to those facts; do not invent simple definitions for the other labels.

Common traps

TrapHow to correct it
Treating inherited rule as the source of public authorityAsk where legitimate authority begins. The constitutional model starts with the people, not a monarch or family line.
Giving the Constitution the job of establishing a national religionKeep framework and belief separate. The Constitution organizes and limits government; the Bill of Rights protects freedom of belief and worship.
Letting one official or institution change the Constitution aloneA constitutional amendment needs broad support at both the national and state levels.
Saying the Bill of Rights protects borders or government powerIts focus is basic freedoms and legal protections for people, not geography or an expansion of official power.
Applying legal duties only to elected leadersThe law applies more widely: citizens, leaders, and government institutions are all within it.
Putting all federal power in one branchLook for divided power and checks between branches, not all power in one place.

Use two steps in the oral exam. First name the kind of fact: source of power, document, amendment, law, branch, number, or economy. Second, answer only what was asked. If the officer asks for one item, one clear answer is enough. If the officer asks for two, think of two different answers before you speak.
