Question 231

What can cause the voltage across reactances in a series RLC circuit to be higher than the voltage applied to the entire circuit?

  1. ResonanceBonne réponse
  2. Capacitance
  3. Low quality factor (Q)
  4. Resistance

Explication

At series resonance the inductive and capacitive reactances cancel, so the current is limited only by the resistance and reaches its maximum; that large current then develops a voltage of Q times the applied voltage across each reactance. The two reactive voltages are 180° apart and cancel in the loop sum, so no conservation law is violated. A low Q produces the opposite effect, and capacitance or resistance alone cannot do this.
