A more efficient code packs more bits into each transmitted symbol — for instance by using more phase and amplitude states — so the bit rate rises while the symbol rate, and therefore the bandwidth, stays the same. Forward error correction works the other way, adding redundancy at the cost of rate or bandwidth.
