In satellite work L band means the 23 centimeter band near 1.26 GHz and S band means the 13 centimeter band near 2.4 GHz, the two microwave bands most often used for satellite uplinks and downlinks. The 2 meter and 70 centimeter bands are called V and U, and the letters have nothing to do with sideband choice or store-and-forward operation.
