Explication
In the resistance range the meter supplies its own small test current and expects to see only that; applying external circuit voltage to those low-current input circuits can destroy them. The reverse case, being on a voltage range while probing a resistor, is harmless because voltage ranges present high impedance and expect applied voltage.
