Question 9

You are emailing three colleagues to ask them to review a document before a Thursday deadline. Where should the request and the deadline appear?

  1. In the subject line and the first sentence, with the background below them.Bonne réponse
  2. After the background, so that readers understand the reasoning before they are asked for anything.
  3. At the end, as a clear closing call to action.
  4. Repeated in every paragraph, so that it cannot be missed.

Explication

Recipients decide whether and when to deal with a message from its opening, and many will not read a long message to the end on first pass. Putting the ask and the date where that decision is made ensures the action is registered even by someone skimming; the background remains available for those who need it. Options 2 and 3 place the only time-critical element where it is least likely to be seen. Repetition (option 4) adds length and obscures which statement of the deadline is authoritative.
