A voice SSB signal occupies roughly 2.4 kHz, so a 2400 Hz filter passes the whole signal while excluding noise outside it. A 500 Hz or 1000 Hz filter would cut away much of the speech, and 5000 Hz would admit about twice the necessary noise.
