Where to stop at a traffic light signal?

The illuminated red signal requires the vehicle to stop, and the STOP plate mounted with that signal identifies the controlling point before the signal assembly. Moving forward to the crossing area would pass that control point, while stopping at an arbitrary location would not satisfy the indication.
