While a person swallows, which structure helps cover the entrance to the airway?

During swallowing the epiglottis folds down and covers the entrance of the airway so food goes into the esophagus. The main bronchi lie much deeper in the airway, inside the chest, and cannot guard its entrance during swallowing.
