Operating procedures: follow the signal path

Etwa 7 Min.

Fragen bleiben in der Sprache, in der sie veröffentlicht wurden.

The Extra pool mixes satellite operation, image transmission, logging, networking, and weak-signal data protocols. Names alone are a poor guide. A stronger method is to follow what happens to the signal: what enters, what transforms it, what timing or framing the receiver needs, and what resource is shared.

Trace the transformation

SystemSignal-path model
Inverting satellite transponderThe uplink is mixed with a local oscillator and the transmitted output is the difference. Frequency order and sideband sense reverse; the uplink and downlink Doppler shifts therefore point in opposite directions and partly cancel
Linear-transponder powerAll passband users share one output-power budget; a dominant uplink drives automatic gain control down and weakens everyone else's downlink
Analog SSTV pictureAudio pitch represents pixel brightness; a VIS header selects the mode, and a separate low-pitched sync signal tells software where a new line begins
Scheduled weak-signal modeThe computer clock places transmit and receive periods on UTC boundaries; the mode's coding then serves the intended path and message format
Q65 receptionThe decoder may combine evidence accumulated across successive receive periods, allowing a signal too weak in one period to emerge over several

This path model prevents category errors. Satellite mode designators name uplink and downlink frequency ranges, not a modulation type. An image mode has separate elements for picture content, line timing, and mode identification. A digital mode's tone count does not state its baud rate or bandwidth by itself, and a synchronized frame does not repair a computer clock that is on the wrong UTC period.

Frage 70

Which of the following is characteristic of an inverting linear transponder?

  1. Doppler shift is reduced because the uplink and downlink shifts are in opposite directions
  2. Signal position in the band is reversed
  3. Upper sideband on the uplink becomes lower sideband on the downlink, and vice versa
  4. All these choices are correct
Frage 110

Which of the following is a method for establishing EME contacts?

  1. Time-synchronous transmissions alternating between stations
  2. Storing and forwarding digital messages
  3. Judging optimum transmission times by monitoring beacons reflected from the moon
  4. High-speed CW identification to avoid fading
Frage 118

To what does the "4" in FT4 refer?

  1. Multiples of 4 bits of user information
  2. Four-tone continuous-phase frequency shift keying
  3. Four transmit/receive cycles per minute
  4. All these choices are correct
