American democracy: match each idea to its job

Aprox. 5 min

Las preguntas se mantienen en el idioma en que fueron publicadas.

In this topic, the officer may ask about a founding document, a basic freedom, self-government, the economy, or the law. The safest method is to identify the job in the question before you recall a name or phrase.

Build a small map of ideas

Begin with the verb. A question may ask what a document does, which words express self-government, how many amendments have been added to the Constitution, what kind of economy the country has, or who must obey the law. These are different jobs. Put the prompt into one row of the map before choosing the fact that belongs to it.

Question jobIdea to recall
Basic national frameworkThe Constitution sets up the federal government, gives it powers and limits, and is the highest law of the country.
Separation from British ruleThe Declaration of Independence said that the colonies were independent from Britain and described natural rights. The Constitution later set up the federal government.
Self-government in the ConstitutionThe Preamble begins We the People. These words teach that the people are the source of the government's authority.
Constitutional amendmentsThe Constitution has twenty-seven amendments. An amendment is a formal change or addition to the Constitution.
Protected freedomFirst ask which amendment or document is named. Speech, religion, press, peaceful assembly, and petition belong together in the First Amendment; other rights appear elsewhere.
Economic systemThe United States has a capitalist or market economy: most property and businesses are privately owned, and supply and demand help set prices.
Government under lawLegal rules apply to private people, officials, and every level of government. Public power is not a personal exception.

For an oral answer, keep the category and the answer separate in your mind. The category is your silent check; the answer is the brief response you say. If two familiar phrases come to mind, ask which one performs the job named in the prompt. This prevents a famous but unrelated fact from taking over.
