The U.S. system: identify the level, branch, and role

Las preguntas se mantienen en el idioma en que fueron publicadas.

This topic mixes institutions, offices, elections, and powers. Do not search your memory for every government fact at once. First decide whether the prompt is about a branch, a level of government, a person's role, or a fact that can change.

Use three labels before you answer

Label the question in this order: level, branch, role. The level is federal, state, or local. At the federal level, the legislative branch makes laws, the executive branch carries out laws, and the judicial branch explains and applies laws in court cases. A named office or group belongs inside one of those branches; it does not become another branch merely because it is important.

Prompt signalReasoning move
Makes, signs, rejects, or reviews a lawSeparate the stages. The legislature passes a bill, the executive may approve or reject it, and a court may later review the law in a case.
Congress or one chamberCongress has the Senate and the House. Each state has two Senators, and the Senate has one hundred members in all.
Cabinet or departmentPlace it inside the executive branch. Department leaders advise the President; they do not perform the legislature's or courts' central job.
President or presidential electionA President is elected for a four-year term. A term is the length of time covered by one election.
Major political partiesThe two major parties are the Democratic Party and the Republican Party.
Federal power or state powerNational powers include currency, war, armed forces, and treaties. Everyday services such as schools, police, licensing, and local land rules belong to states or localities.
Now, your state, or your districtTreat it as a changing or personal fact. Check the current official source near the interview instead of trusting outdated information.

Checks between branches are actions, not a fourth branch. For example, the President can reject a bill, Congress can pass it again under a special rule, and courts can test a law against constitutional limits. The order of succession says who takes over when an office becomes vacant.

For the oral interview, prepare changing answers separately from stable civics facts. Verify officeholders tied to where you live against a current official source shortly before the appointment. For a stable role question, answer the role asked for, not a nearby title from the same building or branch.
