Saint Petersburg served as Russia's imperial capital for long periods. Which city is the national capital today?

Explication

Moscow is Russia's present national capital and therefore fits the current-status wording. Saint Petersburg's long imperial-capital history makes it plausible, but a former role is not a current one.
