Operating-procedure questions become easier when you first classify the situation: voice mode, shared-frequency behavior, CW shorthand, or a digital protocol. Each has its own convention, and an option borrowed from another category is usually the trap.
Match the operating system before the detail
For HF voice, SSB is the normal efficient mode because it transmits one information-bearing sideband while suppressing both the carrier and the duplicate sideband. By convention, voice below 10 MHz uses LSB; voice above 10 MHz, plus VHF and UHF SSB, uses USB. The split is accepted practice, not a difference in efficiency or legality. AFSK digital modes have their own conventions: traditional RTTY normally uses LSB, while JT65, JT9, FT4, and FT8 use USB on every band.
On phone, a station joining an existing contact waits for a pause and gives its call sign once. Before calling on an apparently clear frequency, listen and then ask whether it is in use, identifying your station. Listening for an arbitrary number of minutes cannot reveal a station that is receiving. Once contacts meet, no net, contest, or QSO has ordinary ownership of the channel; emergency communications are the exception.

Troubleshoot in layers. A signal centered in the passband can still fail to decode if the two FSK tones are reversed, the baud rate is wrong, or the wrong sideband reverses those tones. A connected PACTOR session is a two-station link, so a third station cannot join it. A gateway contact begins with a connect request on the gateway's published frequency; email or an unrelated Morse signal does not establish the radio link.
Where the answers are lost
- Making LSB technically superior below 10 MHz. The convention is shared practice; USB and LSB have the same efficiency and both can be lawful.
- Giving SSB benefits it does not have. It saves bandwidth and transmitter power, but it is not easier to tune, immune to impulse noise, or chosen for high-fidelity audio.
- Claiming a clear frequency by arriving first. A net, contest, or contact in progress has no ordinary priority; only emergency communications receive the ranking that the distractors award to routine activity.
- Sorting similar CW signals by sound alone. QRS concerns speed, QRL concerns whether a frequency is busy, KN narrows who should answer, and QRN reports natural static.
- Checking only tuning when digital text is unreadable. Distractors present mark-space reversal, baud rate, and sideband as competing single causes, but each can independently defeat decoding.
- Looking for one symptom of an acknowledged digital link under interference. Corrupted blocks can cause retries, long pauses, timeouts, and a failed connection; the combined option is justified when every listed symptom follows from the protocol.
