Work from the outside inward
At the cell edge, the wall is the outer supportive layer and the cell membrane lies immediately inside it. The wall contains cellulose and is porous; the membrane is the more selective controller of movement. For example, a dissolved substance may pass through spaces in the wall yet still face selective control at the membrane.

Use qualifiers carefully. A mature plant cell commonly has a prominent central vacuole, but plant cells differ with cell type and phase of development.
