These questions ask you to distinguish waste removal from digestion, follow material through a nephron, and trace urine from the kidneys to the outside. Direction words such as from, into, return, and toward usually reveal the process.

Track material and direction

Excretion removes metabolic wastes made by cells; it is not the passage of undigested food. The kidneys carry out selective processing, removing wastes including urea while retaining needed substances rather than stripping blood of everything dissolved in it. Inside each kidney, microscopic nephrons form urine through linked steps. At a glomerulus, pressure filters water and many small solutes from blood into nephron fluid, while blood cells are generally retained. Along the tubule, reabsorption moves needed water and solutes back to blood. Secretion moves selected substances in the opposite direction, from nearby blood into the tubule. What remains includes water, metabolic wastes, and ions present in excess.

Finish by asking what the adjustment achieves. Changing how much water or which ions return to blood changes what is excreted, helping keep internal conditions relatively stable. The same direction-based reasoning applies to substances that influence pH: varying their reabsorption and excretion contributes to acid-base regulation.
