Everyday elements: match a use to the decisive property

Questions stay in the language in which they were published.

These questions ask which element suits a familiar use or which statement describes that use accurately. Extract every requirement, match each one to a property, and check whether the application uses the element itself, one of its compounds or a mixture containing it.

Build a property-to-use chain

Start with the job, not with a remembered object. A material for a light outdoor panel, for example, might need low density and resistance to corrosion; both conditions must be satisfied. Then state the chain explicitly: property, practical effect, use. Finally, inspect the wording for chemical form. An element can be important even when the working material contains its ions or compounds rather than a visible piece of the pure substance.

When a table supplies an atomic number, use it only after identifying the intended element. Atomic number is the proton count, so it can turn a use clue into a particle-count result without changing which substance the use describes.

Claims that sound plausible but go too far

Matching only one requirementHydrogen is light but flammable, and an ordinary brittle solid cannot serve as flexible wire. Test every stated property before choosing.
Confusing a similar-looking material nameSilicon is an element used as a semiconductor; silicone names a family of polymers. Similar spelling does not mean the same material.
Treating low reactivity as fuel behaviourA shielding gas protects hot metal because it reacts weakly. Oxygen would encourage oxidation instead of separating the weld from air.
Calling every coloured tube neon or removing the electrical dischargeNeon itself has a characteristic reddish-orange discharge. Other colours may come from other gases or coatings, and excitation is required.
Replacing useful compounds with chunks of the pure elementFertilizers and iodized salt supply elements in compounds. The practical role does not imply pieces of hazardous white phosphorus or elemental iodine.
