Licence questions become easier when you separate the person, the vehicle, the documents and the current graduated stage. Check each layer in that order instead of assuming that one valid card settles the whole trip.
Build the authority in four layers
Begin with entry eligibility. An Ontario resident may apply for the first G1 at age 16. Vision and knowledge testing belong at this initial gate; road testing comes later. Next match the vehicle to the licence class. Class G is the ordinary category for a car, van or small truck that stays within the class limits. Then check the trip documents. The person needs a valid driver licence, while the vehicle needs a valid permit, plate and insurance. None of those vehicle items replaces another, and a passport or purchase record does not establish driving authority.
| Layer | Question to resolve |
|---|---|
| Entry | Is the resident at least 16, and have the vision and knowledge gates been passed? |
| Vehicle | Does the car, van or small truck fit within Class G limits? |
| Trip documents | Are the driver licence, vehicle permit, plate and insurance all valid? |
| Graduated stage | Which G1 or G2 conditions still apply before the next road test? |
At G1, distinguish the normal waiting period from the reduced one. The ordinary wait before the first road test is twelve months, while a government-approved beginner course reduces it to eight. During G1 practice, the accompanying person must hold full Class G authority, have at least four years of licensed experience and sit beside the novice for instruction. That person must be the only other front-seat occupant and must have BAC strictly below 0.05; exactly 0.05 does not satisfy a below-0.05 condition. This is not an unconditional zero-alcohol passenger rule.
G2 changes the supervision rule but does not remove every restriction. A G2 holder may generally drive without an accompanying person on Ontario roads during the usual twelve-month practice stage. Zero alcohol still applies, and every passenger must have a working seatbelt. The twelve months lead toward the next road test; they do not postpone ordinary solo driving until the stage is complete.
The traps
- Putting a road test ahead of the first G1. Initial issuance depends on the age, vision and knowledge gates; road testing comes later in the graduated path.
- Using the motorcycle category for an ordinary passenger vehicle. Cars, vans and small trucks within the ordinary limits use Class G authority.
- Checking only the driver credential and insurance. The vehicle also needs a valid permit and plate.
- Keeping the ordinary twelve-month wait after approved beginner education. That approved course reduces the normal G1 waiting period to eight months.
Try it
A G1 driver is practising. Which person satisfies the accompanying-driver condition?
- A full G driver with four years' experience and BAC 0.04, seated beside the novice to instruct, with no other front passenger
- A full G driver with four years' experience and BAC 0.05, seated beside the novice to instruct, with no other front passenger
- A full G driver with four years' experience and BAC 0.00, seated in the rear while another passenger sits in front
- A G2 driver with five years' experience and BAC 0.00, seated beside the novice to instruct, with no other front passenger
A 24-year-old G2 driver has held the licence for three months. Which plan fits the general G2 conditions in this scope?
- Drive only with a full G companion on Ontario roads and allow one passenger to ride without a working seatbelt
- Drive alone only on local roads and allow BAC below 0.05
- Drive alone on Ontario roads, keep zero alcohol and require a working seatbelt for every passenger
- Drive alone only after completing the full twelve-month G2 stage, then allow one passenger without a working seatbelt
