Emergencies and crashes: act by trigger and sequence

About 5 min

Questions stay in the language in which they were published.

Emergency and collision questions test trigger, road layout and sequence. First identify whether the hazard is approaching, stopped at the roadside or already a collision, then apply the matching placement, movement or reporting duty.

Separate the immediate road response from the report

For an emergency vehicle approaching with the required lights, siren or bell, the ordinary response is to stop as near as practical to the right curb or road edge. Road layout can change the edge: on a one-way road or divided highway with more than two lanes, move toward the closest curb or edge. In every layout, remain clear of intersections. A stopped roadside vehicle calls for the move-over response only under its matching warning: flashing red or red-and-blue lights on an emergency vehicle, or flashing amber lights on a tow truck. Approach in the same direction, reduce speed and proceed cautiously. When at least two lanes run that way, move one lane away if the change is safe.

Collision trigger or taskAction
A person is injuredReport to police immediately.
Damage alone is above $5,000Report immediately; exactly $5,000 is not more than the prescribed amount.
A vehicle door contacts a cyclist, bicycle or moving vehicleReport immediately under the independent door-contact branch.
Minor no-injury collision with movable vehiclesMove them as far off the roadway as possible.
Movable vehicles are not availablePlace warning signals far enough away for approaching traffic to slow or stop.

Keep three immediate-reporting branches distinct. Any injury triggers a report. Without injury, apparent damage to vehicles or other property must be more than 5,000;anamountequalto5,000; an amount equal to 5,000 does not cross that strict boundary. Door contact with a cyclist, bicycle or moving vehicle is independent of both tests, even when the motor vehicle was parked and the damage appears minor. For a minor no-injury collision, reduce the secondary traffic hazard before paperwork: move vehicles that can be driven safely, and use warning signals when they cannot be moved.

Build the written exchange as a three-folder traceability chain rather than a report checklist. Start with the vehicle folder: note the permit identifier and identify the registered owner with a contact address. Next fill the coverage folder with the liability carrier and policy identifier. Finish with the person-at-wheel folder: record that person's name and address together with the driver-licence number and issuing jurisdiction. The request may come from someone who suffered loss or injury, a police officer or a witness. Give the record in writing and keep it separate from information police collect when reporting is mandatory.
