Emergencies and crashes: act in the right order

About 5 min

Questions stay in the language in which they were published.

These questions test sequence: stop, protect people, identify the parties, contact the right service, and manage a disabled vehicle. Solve the immediate safety duties before thinking about repairs or the rest of the trip.

Use the response sequence

The trigger is the event, not a later discussion: a crash within the stated injury, death or property-damage scope begins the response sequence. First halt movement before dealing with people, information or reporting. Next take necessary measures to assist casualties. Then provide the victim with identifying contact details such as name, telephone number and address. Vehicle colour, a licence plate by itself or an insurer’s general contact details do not replace the personal information required by the rule.

NeedAction
Activation of the crash-response sequenceHalt movement before assistance, information exchange or reporting.
Injured personTake necessary measures to assist the casualty.
Identity exchangeProvide name, telephone number and address to the victim.
Police emergency reportUse 112 and report the location, casualties, damage and measures taken.
Fire, rescue or emergency medical servicesUse 119 for that service channel.
Expressway or automobile-only-road breakdownMove to the right edge and display the carried approved warning sign as prescribed.

When the national rule requires a police report, make it without delay. The useful facts are where the crash happened, casualty information, the damage caused and the response measures already taken. A narrow exception exists where it is clear that only the vehicle or tram was damaged and the necessary road-safety and traffic-flow measures have been completed; do not turn that exception into a general permission to leave. Keep service numbers distinct. Call 112 for police. Call 119 for fire, rescue or emergency medical services. On an expressway or automobile-only road, preparation starts before a breakdown because the vehicle must carry an approved warning sign. If it becomes disabled, stop at the right edge and display the sign as prescribed rather than remaining in an active lane.
