Use chronology, position and function

Start with chronology. A newly conquered district could be controlled quickly with an earth mound, timber tower and enclosed yard. Wealth and time allowed many such strongholds to be rebuilt in stone. Later concentric designs used nested wall circuits, so gaining one line did not end the defence. In the closing medieval centuries, cannon changed the balance because tall masonry built against older weapons could be battered directly. This reduced the military value of traditional castles gradually, not in a single moment.

Then ask where a feature sits and who operates it. The keep is the main central tower. A moat is cut below ground around the site. At a gateway, defenders can lower a portcullis and raise a drawbridge. Arrow slits pierce a wall face for protected shooting, while battlements form alternating cover and openings along the top. Attackers bring rams and throwing engines; defenders operate the fittings built into the castle.
