Mountain states: match each state with its capital

About 5 min

Questions stay in the language in which they were published.

These questions ask you to match a Mountain state to its capital or work backward from the capital to the state. Some also ask you to repair a mismatched pair or recognize the same relationship written in two directions.

Build a two-way Mountain map

Learn each state and capital as one reversible link. On a forward lookup, begin with the state and retrieve its government seat. On a reverse lookup, begin with the city and trace the same link back to the state. Do not use city size, fame, or simple proximity as a substitute for the learned relationship.

A useful recall routine has three moves. Name the state, say its capital, then reverse the pair aloud. Finally, place the pair on a rough west-to-east mental map. This extra location check helps you notice when a city from a neighboring Mountain state has slipped into the wrong pair.

Where the mix-ups happen

Tempting routeHow to reject it
Choosing a familiar city from the right state, such as Billings, Idaho Falls, Casper, Albuquerque, Tucson, or ProvoA city can belong to the state without being its government seat. Return to the exact state-capital link instead of relying on recognition.
Moving a real capital across a nearby state lineRegional proximity does not make capitals interchangeable. Say the complete pair before committing to either direction of the lookup.
Treating Mexico as a city that could complete the New Mexican capital pairMexico names a country in this context. The task requires a U.S. city that serves as a state government seat.
Confusing Idaho with Iowa during a reverse lookupThe short names look and sound similar, but they are different states. Attach the full state name to the capital when you rehearse the pair.
