Northeast states and their capitals

About 5 min

Questions stay in the language in which they were published.

These questions ask you to connect a Northeast state with its capital in either direction. You may also need to separate a capital from a better-known city or recognize whether the response must be a city or a state.

Build the Northeast map

Learn this group as two map bands. The New England band contains Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut; the remaining pair here is Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Say every pair both ways so that a reverse clue feels as natural as a state-first clue. Keep the complete state and city together instead of relying on a shared first letter or a familiar place name.

StateCapitalMemory signal
MaineAugustaKeep the pair intact in both directions.
New HampshireConcordUse the full pair rather than city familiarity.
VermontMontpelierLink the less familiar capital firmly to its state.
MassachusettsBostonThe familiar city also holds the capital role here.
Rhode IslandProvidenceSeparate the government seat from historical fame.
ConnecticutHartfordReverse the pair before answering a state lookup.
PennsylvaniaHarrisburgSeparate the government seat from larger cities.
New JerseyTrentonCheck whether the prompt requests a city or a state.

For any prompt, first label the direction. State to city means you must produce a capital; city to state means you must produce a state name. Then locate the pair in the regional group and check the response type before committing.

Where mix-ups happen

Tempting routeHow to reject it
Choosing the most famous or largest cityCapital status is a government role, not a fame ranking. Portland, Manchester, Burlington, Philadelphia, and Newark are real places, but familiarity cannot replace the learned pair.
Letting a historic city stand in for the capitalHistorical importance does not transfer the capital role. Rhode Island belongs with Providence rather than Newport.
Following a shared city name toward a distant statePortland appears in more than one state's geography. A city association is not enough, so keep the complete state-capital link together.
Giving a city when the prompt asks for a stateWords such as which state or state label determine the response type. Philadelphia and Newark remain cities even when they belong to the relevant region.
