Canberra exists because Sydney and Melbourne could not agree which of them deserved the honour, so a compromise capital was purpose-built on pastoral land between the two, in the traditional country of the Ngunnawal people. Melbourne actually housed the federal Parliament until it finally moved to Canberra in 1927.
