Lake Baikal in southern Siberia reaches about 1,642 m, and that depth makes it a freshwater reservoir on a planetary scale: it holds roughly a fifth of all the unfrozen fresh water on Earth's surface. The Caspian Sea is the tempting answer because it is by far the largest lake, but at about 1,025 m it is not the deepest.
