These questions ask you to match countries and present national capitals across the Middle East, Central Asia and the Caucasus. Exact names and current political roles matter, especially where another city has a strong historical or governmental association.
Build three chains instead of one long list
For the Middle Eastern core, connect Iran–Tehran, Iraq–Baghdad, Saudi Arabia–Riyadh, Jordan–Amman, Lebanon–Beirut, Kuwait–Kuwait City and Oman–Muscat. Add the Gulf and eastern Mediterranean links Bahrain–Manama, Qatar–Doha, Cyprus–Nicosia, Syria–Damascus and Yemen–Sana'a. Keep Kuwait City as the full English city name, not merely the country name.
For Central Asia, travel east from Afghanistan–Kabul through Turkmenistan–Ashgabat, Uzbekistan–Tashkent, Tajikistan–Dushanbe and Kyrgyzstan–Bishkek. Finish with the Caucasus triangle Armenia–Yerevan, Azerbaijan–Baku and Georgia–Tbilisi. Recite every chain backwards as well as forwards so a city-led question activates the country link directly.
| Signal | Decision |
|---|---|
| present-day or current | Choose the current national relationship, not a former capital. |
| port, commercial centre or major city | Treat that description as a separate function and return to the national pair. |
| regional or subnational capital | Do not promote the smaller jurisdiction's capital to the national level. |
| temporary seat | Separate the government's temporary location from the country's constitutional national capital. |
Where memory takes a wrong turn
- Former capitals can overpower the word current. Isfahan, Kandahar, Samarkand and Muharraq carry genuine history, but modern pairings point to Tehran, Kabul, Tashkent and Manama.
- A port or commercial centre may be more familiar internationally. Jeddah, Aqaba and Tripoli in Lebanon do not replace Riyadh, Amman and Beirut in their national relationships.
- Similar regional associations are not interchangeable. Türkmenabat is not Ashgabat, and Ganja belongs to Azerbaijan without replacing Baku as its capital.
- A city can lead a smaller jurisdiction. Batumi is the capital of Adjara, yet the national relationship for Georgia remains Tbilisi.
- A temporary government seat does not automatically become the national capital. Yemen retains Sana'a as its constitutional national capital while Aden serves as the temporary seat used by the internationally recognised government.
