These questions ask you to move in either direction between a Western European country and its present national capital. Some also require you to distinguish a constitutional capital from a government seat, or a whole-state capital from a capital inside that state.
Turn the region into a journey
Picture an Atlantic-to-Mediterranean route. Begin on the islands with Iceland–Reykjavík, Ireland–Dublin and the United Kingdom–London. On the Atlantic mainland, connect Portugal–Lisbon, Spain–Madrid and France–Paris. Move north-east through Belgium–Brussels, the Netherlands–Amsterdam and Germany–Berlin, then continue to Luxembourg–Luxembourg City. This route prevents a famous city in the correct country from replacing the actual capital.
Now draw a southern curve through Andorra–Andorra la Vella, Monaco–Monaco, Italy–Rome and Greece–Athens. Finish with Austria–Vienna and the Nordic chain Denmark–Copenhagen, Norway–Oslo, Sweden–Stockholm and Finland–Helsinki. Practise every link forwards and backwards: seeing Lisbon should call up Portugal just as quickly as seeing Portugal calls up Lisbon.
| Signal | How to decide |
|---|---|
| today, current or present-day | Use the modern national pairing and reject a city whose capital role belongs to the past. |
| constitutional capital | For the Netherlands, keep Amsterdam even though national government institutions are in The Hague. |
| whole country or national capital | Match the sovereign state, not a constituent area, district or nearby state. |
| same-name place | Keep the exact conventional form: Luxembourg City for Luxembourg, Monaco for Monaco, and Andorra la Vella for Andorra. |
Reject the familiar wrong turns
- A former capital can feel more authoritative than the current one. Bonn belongs to West Germany's history and Turku to Finland's earlier capital history; present-day wording sends you back to Berlin and Helsinki.
- International fame is not capital status. Barcelona, Antwerp, Salzburg and Bergen are memorable for culture, trade or history, but the route still pairs their countries with Madrid, Brussels, Vienna and Oslo.
- A capital inside a country is not always the capital of the whole sovereign state. Belfast is the capital of Northern Ireland, while the United Kingdom's national pairing remains London and Ireland's remains Dublin.
- Where institutions sit can differ from the constitutional label. The Hague hosts the Dutch government and royal court, but the Netherlands' constitutional capital is Amsterdam.
- A district or neighbouring country can borrow familiarity from the right place name. Monte Carlo is within Monaco rather than a separate sovereign capital, and Reykjavík must stay with Iceland rather than drift to another Nordic country.
