Follow force through the system
Inside a muscle fibre, ATP supplies immediately usable energy and sliding interactions between actin and myosin generate force. A skeletal muscle develops tension when it contracts. Through a tendon, which connects muscle to bone, that tension pulls on the skeleton. Because a muscle actively pulls rather than pushes, an opposite joint movement commonly uses an antagonistic partner: one member contracts while the other relaxes. At the elbow, flexion and extension illustrate opposing actions, with biceps contributing to flexion and triceps to extension.

Use four checks in order. Name the tissue from its location. Decide whether control is voluntary or involuntary. For skeletal movement, find the muscle-to-bone attachment and the direction of pull. Finally, separate the immediate contraction machinery from supporting processes: ATP transfers usable energy to the actin–myosin system, while oxygen helps processes that replenish energy supplies.
Common wrong turns
- Imagining a contracting muscle swelling to push a bone reverses the mechanics. Contraction creates tension along attachments, so skeletal muscle pulls; another muscle or another force produces the opposite direction.
- Calling a tendon a bone-to-bone connector swaps it with a ligament. Follow the force path: a tendon links muscle to bone and carries the muscle's pull to the skeleton.
- Making both members of an antagonistic pair shorten equally cannot explain opposite actions. For a particular movement, one member can contract while its opposing member relaxes; injury is not what antagonistic means.
- Using involuntary as the only clue confuses smooth and cardiac tissues. Add location: hollow-organ walls point to smooth muscle, whereas the heart wall points to cardiac muscle.
- Treating oxygen as the immediate energy currency skips the energy-transfer step. Oxygen supports energy-releasing processes, but ATP is used directly by the contraction machinery.
