These questions ask you to identify a skeletal structure from its position, connection or job. First locate the structure, then ask whether the required role is support, protection, movement, storage or blood-cell formation.
Build the skeleton from centre to connection
Start with the two large divisions. The axial skeleton follows the body's central axis and includes the skull, vertebral column, ribs and sternum. The appendicular skeleton contains the limbs plus the shoulder and pelvic girdles that attach them to the axial part. This map helps you connect each protective structure with what it surrounds, while the limbs and girdles provide the framework used in movement. Bones do not supply the pulling force themselves; attached muscles do.

Use the most specific clue. A question about what two tissues connect separates ligament from tendon; one about a smooth joint surface points to cartilage. A location clue separates the central-axis bones from limbs and girdles. A production clue points inside certain bones to red marrow rather than to the hard mineralised tissue around it.
Common wrong turns
- Giving bones an active pushing role confuses framework with force. The skeleton supports and provides levers, while muscle contraction supplies the pull that moves them.
- Putting limbs in the axial division ignores the body map. Central-axis structures are axial; limbs and their attachment girdles are appendicular.
- Calling a muscle-to-bone connection a ligament swaps two connective tissues. Ligaments join bone to bone and stabilise joints; tendons transmit muscle force to bone.
- Assigning every protective job to one structure loses the location clue. Match the skull with the head, the vertebral column with the trunk and spinal cord, and the rib cage with the movable chest enclosure.
- Placing all minerals only in marrow confuses tissue with cavity contents. Mineralised bone stores calcium and phosphate; red marrow performs blood-cell formation.
